For me, the answer has always been nothing. I have Aphantasia, also known as a blind mind's eye.
I lived the first 25 years of my life blissfully unaware that others could deliberately conjure up mental images when they close their eyes. While I do dream visually, any and all mental imagery eludes me in a conscious state. When asked to imagine something, I can think about it conceptually and describe it verbally, but no mental imagery has ever accompanied; my closed eyes see nothing but a dark static emptiness void of any images.
As my conscious mind does not create imagery, photos and videos supplement my memories with visuals. Perhaps this is why taking and viewing photos is so important to me, as it's the only way for me revisit anything I've ever seen.
